Self-drive in Mali is for the prepared rather than the casual visitor, and the licence question has a clear answer once you separate it from the harder realities of the road.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Mali on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. There is no EU-style automatic recognition here, so the IDP — which translates your details into French and other languages — smooths things at checkpoints and rental desks. Arrange it in India before you travel; you cannot obtain one in Mali. You switch to the right

India drives on the left; Mali drives on the right. That reversal is the single adjustment most likely to catch you out, and the risk window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel stop, a glance the wrong way, a roundabout that now turns the other direction. Start somewhere quiet rather than in central Bamako and consciously check the new direction at every junction.

A flat zero alcohol limit, and modest speeds

Mali runs a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit — effectively a total ban, and stricter than the 0.03 you’re used to in India. Treat driving and drinking as completely separate. On speed, the posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on the few faster highways — lower at the top end than India’s 120. But the numbers matter less than the surfaces: outside the capital, sealed roads give way to rough, unlit stretches where condition, not the sign, sets your safe speed. The emergency number is 112.
