Most people picture the Maldives as overwater villas, not road trips — and that instinct is correct. Before you think about a licence, it is worth knowing how little driving the country actually involves.

The honest answer for American visitors

You can drive in the Maldives on your US licence where roads exist, and carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it keeps things tidy at any rental desk. But here is the reality: the Maldives is a scatter of hundreds of low coral islands, and you move between them by ferry, speedboat or seaplane, not by car. Real driving is confined to Malé, the dense capital, and a small number of linked islands such as those reached by the Sinamalé bridge. For a classic resort stay, you may never sit behind a wheel at all.

Left-hand traffic, in tight quarters

Where you do drive, the Maldives keeps to the left — the opposite of the United States. Because the distances are so short and the streets so congested, the side switch is less of a hazard than usual; the challenge in Malé is its narrow, scooter-filled lanes rather than speed. Keep left, go slowly, and watch for motorbikes filtering on every side. Limits sit around 50 km/h in town, 80 on rural stretches and up to 100 km/h on the few longer roads, but you will rarely get near them.

The rule you must not break

The Maldives enforces a 0.0 BAC drink-drive limit, and that fits a country where alcohol is tightly controlled and largely restricted to licensed resorts. Treat it as absolute: do not drink and drive, full stop. Keep your licence and passport with you, and remember that for most of your trip a boat schedule will matter far more than any road sign.
