Malaysia accepts foreign licences for short visits, but take an International Driving Permit with your Swiss licence. Traffic keeps left, expressways cap at 110 km/h and the emergency number is 999.
Malaysia’s toll expressways along the west coast are smooth and well signed, and a hire car opens up the Cameron Highlands and the east-coast beaches. For a Swiss driver the paperwork is light. The habit that needs rewiring is which side of the road you are on.
Left, not right
Switzerland drives on the right. Malaysia drives on the left. The risky moments come early: pulling out of a car park into the wrong lane, a roundabout that now turns clockwise, the reflex to look left first at a junction. Start on a quiet road outside Kuala Lumpur and take every turn deliberately until it feels normal.
The licence and the permit
Malaysia lets visitors drive on a foreign licence for a short stay. Canada’s advice puts the period at three months for its licences, after which an International Driving Permit or a Malaysian licence is needed, and the UK tells its drivers to carry the 1949 IDP with their licence. A Swiss licence is not printed in English or Malay, so an IDP is the sensible companion from day one. It can only be issued at home, so arrange it before you fly. Speed, alcohol and the road
Expressways top out at 110 km/h, below the 120 you are used to, and lower limits are posted on other roads. The alcohol limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, the same 0.05% as at home, and Canada’s advice describes fines, prison and loss of licence for offenders. Seatbelts are compulsory and using a phone while driving is banned. Motorcyclists weave between lanes in heavy traffic, so check your mirrors more often than you would on a Swiss motorway, and take care in tropical downpours.
