Can a Swedish Driver Use Their Licence in Malaysia? — Yes, with an IDP

Swedish drivers arrive with two strong habits: a near-zero attitude to alcohol and a respect for lane discipline. The first travels perfectly to Malaysia. The second gets tested, because here you drive on the other side and share the road with a wall of motorcycles.

The verdict on your Swedish licence

A Swedish licence is accepted for short visits and car rental in Malaysia, and an International Driving Permit is recommended as the certified translation that rental desks and police prefer. Keep the IDP, your Swedish licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit in Sweden before you travel — it is not issued to visitors on arrival.

The one real adjustment: driving on the left

Sweden drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left. The mirror affects everything — your seat is on the right, roundabouts turn clockwise, and your instinctive look at a junction is reversed. The first day is the risky one, usually pulling out of a car park or merging onto the expressway. Malaysia also has dense motorcycle traffic filtering between lanes far more than you see at home, so it is worth easing in on quiet roads around Kuala Lumpur before tackling the city.

Alcohol: you are already in the right mindset

The general limit is 0.08, but in Muslim-majority areas it is effectively zero and enforcement is firm. Coming from Sweden’s strict 0.02, this is no adjustment at all — keep the no-drinking-before-driving rule you already follow.

Limits are 50 km/h urban, 90 rural, 110 motorway. The North–South Expressway is well-built; the care is needed on secondary roads in monsoon rain and around unpredictable two-wheelers. Fuel is very cheap at around $0.48/litre, and the emergency number is 999.
