Malaysia on a Spanish Licence — Yes, but You Drive on the Left

Spanish drivers will find Malaysia’s expressways familiar enough — well-surfaced, clearly signed, easy going. What they will not find familiar is sitting on the right of the car and turning into traffic that comes from the other direction.

Driving on a Spanish licence

Yes, you can. A Spanish licence is accepted for short tourist stays and rentals in Malaysia, and an International Driving Permit is recommended as the official translation that rental companies and police expect. Keep the IDP, your Spanish licence and your passport together, and get the permit in Spain beforehand — it cannot be issued to you in Malaysia.

The side switch is the real hurdle

Spain drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left. Everything is reversed, from your seating position to the direction roundabouts flow. The mistakes nearly always come in the first day — leaving a petrol station, joining a roundabout, the reflex glance the wrong way. Kuala Lumpur also has dense motorcycle traffic that filters between cars on both sides, so it pays to find your feet on a quieter road first.

Alcohol: the number you already know

The limit is 0.05, identical to Spain’s, with no separate figure for any group of drivers, and enforcement is consistent. The simplest policy is no alcohol before you drive.

Speeds, roads and cost

Limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 rural and 110 on motorways — below the speeds you are used to in Spain. The North–South Expressway is reliable; the real care is needed on secondary roads in monsoon rain and around unpredictable two-wheelers. The emergency number is 999.
