Quick Answer

Yes — a South Korean licence holder can drive in Malaysia, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The real adjustment is not the paperwork: Malaysia drives on the left, the opposite of Korea, and heavy motorcycle traffic weaves through every lane.

Malaysia is one of the easiest South-East Asian countries to self-drive — the North–South Expressway runs the length of the peninsula and the road signs use Latin script you can read at a glance. The licence question is the simple part. What actually changes for a Korean driver is which side of the road you sit on.

The verdict for a South Korean licence

You can drive in Malaysia on your South Korean licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. It is not always demanded at the rental counter, but having the IDP smooths things with police and avoids any argument over the Korean-script licence. Sort the IDP in Korea before you fly — you cannot obtain one once you land. Keep the IDP, your home licence and passport as a set.

The real change: Malaysia drives on the left

South Korea drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left. This is the single thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout (now clockwise), or glancing the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on a quiet road rather than central Kuala Lumpur, and stay deliberate until left-side driving stops feeling backwards.

Motorcycles are the other adjustment

Malaysian traffic carries a huge volume of motorcycles, and they filter between lanes and along the hard shoulder constantly. Mirror-check before every lane change and never assume a gap is empty. Outside the expressways the urban limit is 50 km/h and rural roads 90 km/h, with the expressway capped at 110 km/h — but realistic speeds depend on the bikes and weather more than the sign.

Alcohol and the cost of driving

The headline drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, but it is effectively zero for Muslim drivers and policed hard nationwide, so the safe rule is none at all before driving. Fuel is genuinely cheap at around $0.48 a litre, one of the lowest pump prices you will meet anywhere, which makes a road trip the affordable way to see the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A South Korean licence is accepted for short tourist visits, and an IDP is recommended alongside it — rental desks and police prefer to see one. Carry your Korean licence, the IDP and your passport together.

Check if your licence is valid

Malaysia drives on the left, the opposite of South Korea. Roundabouts flow clockwise and you sit on the right of the car, so your first hour needs deliberate concentration at every junction.

The general limit is 0.08 BAC, but it is effectively zero for Muslim drivers and enforcement is strict. Treat it as no alcohol before driving — well below Korea's 0.03 in practice.
