Can a Polish Driver Use Their Licence in Malaysia? — Yes, with an IDP

Poland already runs one of Europe’s strictest alcohol limits, so the rules that surprise Polish drivers in Malaysia are not about drinking — they are about which side of the road you sit on and how the local traffic behaves.

The licence question, answered

A Polish licence is accepted for short visits and car rental in Malaysia, and an International Driving Permit is recommended as the translation rental desks and police prefer to see. Keep the IDP, your Polish licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit before you leave Poland — it is not issued to visitors on arrival.

The genuine adjustment: Malaysia drives on the left

Poland drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left. That mirrors the whole experience — seating position, roundabout direction, the instinctive look at a junction. The first day is when mistakes happen, especially leaving a car park or merging onto an expressway. Alcohol: stricter than the headline number

Limits run 50 km/h urban, 90 rural, 110 motorway. The North–South Expressway is good; secondary roads, monsoon rain and unpredictable two-wheelers are the real hazards. Fuel is cheap at about $0.48/litre and the emergency number is 999.
