Can an Italian Drive in Malaysia? — Yes, on an IDP & on the Left

Italy and Malaysia both make driving feel easy on paper, but the gap between them is wider than the licence rules suggest. The paperwork is simple; the habit you have to break is not.

The verdict for Italian licence holders

You can drive in Malaysia on your Italian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go with it. Malaysia accepts the Italian card for short tourist stays and rentals, but the IDP acts as the official translation police and rental desks like to see. Carry all three — Italian licence, IDP, passport — and sort the permit in Italy before you fly, because you cannot obtain one once you arrive.

The real adjustment: Malaysia drives on the left

This is the difference that matters. Italy drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left, so everything is mirrored — the roundabouts turn the other way, the gearstick sits to your left, and your instinct at a junction will point you the wrong way for the first day. Kuala Lumpur traffic is dense and the motorcycle volume is heavy, with riders filtering on both sides, so your first hour is best spent on a quiet road rather than a city interchange.

An alcohol limit that changes by area

On paper the limit is 0.08, looser than Italy’s 0.05. In practice it is a trap: in Muslim-majority areas the effective limit is zero, and enforcement across the country is firm. Treat it as a no-alcohol rule before driving and you avoid the whole problem.

Speeds and roads

Town limit is 50 km/h, rural roads 90, and motorways 110 — lower than Italy’s 130, so ease off the cruise control. The North–South Expressway is genuinely good; it is the secondary roads, monsoon rain and unpredictable two-wheeler traffic that demand attention rather than the speed limits themselves.
