Quick Answer

Malaysia is one of the easier long-haul drives for an Irish licence holder — both countries drive on the left, so there is no mirror-image switch to learn. An IDP is recommended, your licence is good for three months, and the real adjustments are dense motorcycle traffic and fuel at about a third of Irish prices.

Most long-haul drives ask an Irish licence holder to relearn the road from scratch. Malaysia is the welcome exception — the one big thing that catches tourists almost everywhere simply doesn’t apply here.

The side switch you don’t have to make

Malaysia drives on the left, exactly as Ireland does. That single fact removes the steepest part of the learning curve: your seating position, gear hand, roundabout direction and instinctive glances all stay as they are at home. You can collect the car and pull into traffic without the unnerving first-day disorientation a trip to mainland Europe or the US would bring. An International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with your Irish licence, and that combination covers you for stays of up to three months — long enough for any normal holiday, after which a local conversion would be needed.

Motorbikes everywhere — the real adjustment

If the side of the road is familiar, the texture of the traffic is not. Malaysia has an enormous volume of motorcycles, and they filter between lanes, undertake and appear in your mirrors constantly, especially around Kuala Lumpur. Check your blind spots religiously and don’t change lanes on assumption. The motorways themselves are good and well engineered; rural roads vary, and tropical downpours can cut visibility to near nothing in minutes, so slow down hard when the rain comes.

Speeds, drink limits and the cost of fuel

Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 on rural roads and 110 on motorways — the motorway figure sits below Ireland’s 120, so don’t drift over it. The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, looser than Ireland’s 0.05, but treat that as headroom you never use; enforcement is firm. The standout figure is fuel: at roughly $0.48/litre, filling up costs a fraction of what you pay at home. The emergency number is 999.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for up to three months on your Irish licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to sit alongside it. Beyond three months you would need to convert to a local licence.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes — both drive on the left. That removes the biggest hazard most overseas trips create, so the controls and road position will feel natural from the start.

The general limit is 0.08 BAC, looser than Ireland's 0.05, but it does not mean drink and drive — enforcement is strict and the safest policy on unfamiliar roads is zero.
