Quick Answer

Yes — a Brazilian licence holder can drive in Malaysia, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it for stays of up to three months. Two things will feel strange: Malaysia drives on the left where Brazil drives on the right, and the drink-drive limit of 0.08 is far looser than the zero-tolerance Lei Seca you are used to — so don't be lulled into treating it as permission to drink.

Malaysia is one of South-East Asia’s easiest countries to self-drive: the North–South Expressway is modern, fuel is cheap, and signage carries English. For a Brazilian visitor the paperwork is light. What changes everything for the first day is the side of the road.

The verdict for Brazilian licence holders

You can drive in Malaysia on your Brazilian licence, valid for stays of up to three months, with an IDP recommended to carry alongside it. The permit is not a formality you can skip lightly — it gives the rental agent and any officer a translation they recognise, and it is cheap insurance. Arrange it in Brazil before departure and keep it with your licence and passport.

The left-hand switch is the real challenge

Brazil drives on the right; Malaysia drives on the left. You will sit on the right-hand side of the car, change gear with your left hand, and — the part that catches people — give way to the right at roundabouts, which flow clockwise here. The open expressway is easy enough; the danger zone is a junction or a multi-lane city street where instinct pulls you the wrong way. Spend your first half-hour somewhere quiet before taking on Kuala Lumpur.

Don’t be fooled by the alcohol limit

Coming from Brazil’s zero-tolerance Lei Seca, the Malaysian limit of 0.08 looks generous. Treat that as a warning rather than an invitation. Enforcement is active, penalties are heavy, and the loose number does not change the basic maths — alcohol and an unfamiliar left-hand drive car are a poor mix. When you are driving, drink nothing. Motorcycle traffic is dense and weaves between lanes, so leave space and check mirrors constantly. Petrol is around $0.48/litre, among the cheapest in the region. The general emergency number is 999.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A Brazilian licence is valid for visits of up to three months, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. Rental desks in Kuala Lumpur and at the airport will want to see your passport too.

Check if your licence is valid

No — this is the big one. Brazil drives on the right and Malaysia drives on the left, so you sit on the right of the car and the gearstick is to your left. Take your first stretch on quiet roads.

The general limit is 0.08, much higher than Brazil's near-zero Lei Seca standard. That looser number is a trap, not a licence to drink — Malaysian enforcement is real and the safe approach when driving is none at all.
