Can an American Drive in Malawi? — Carry an IDP and Switch to the Left

Malawi — the “Warm Heart of Africa” — rewards a self-drive trip with the lake, the highlands and game parks strung along a manageable north–south spine. For an American driver the licence is the easy part; the two things that actually take adjusting are driving on the left and reading roads where the hazards aren’t the ones a US driver is trained for.

Can you drive in Malawi on a US licence?

Yes. Your American licence is accepted for visitors, and an IDP is recommended to carry with it — rental companies and roadside police prefer to see one alongside your US licence and passport. The biggest adjustment: driving on the left

The United States drives on the right; Malawi drives on the left. Every instinct flips — which way you look first, which lane a turn lands you in, how a roundabout flows. The danger window is your first day, especially pulling out of a lodge or fuel station and at junctions where the reflex glance goes the wrong way. Spend your first hour on quiet roads before you take on Lilongwe or Blantyre traffic.

The road, not the limit, is the real hazard

Posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h rural and about 100 km/h on the main highways — but the number is rarely your problem. Outside the main routes, surfaces deteriorate, and you’ll share the road with pedestrians, bicycles carrying impossible loads, minibuses that stop without warning, and livestock. Daytime driving is far safer than night, when unlit vehicles and people on the road make the dark genuinely dangerous. Drive to the conditions; check the Speed Limit Map before a long leg.

Before you collect the car

• Carry your US licence, IDP and passport together.
• Fuel runs around $1.35/litre, and stations can be sparse between towns — fill up when you pass one, and carry water.
• The emergency number is 112; rural mobile signal is patchy, so download offline maps.
