Can an Indian Drive in Macau? — IDP, Same Left Side, 0.05 Limit

Macau is one of the few overseas destinations where an Indian driver does not have to relearn the side of the road — but it is also a place where most visitors decide not to drive at all. Here is the honest picture.

Driving on an Indian licence

To drive in Macau you need an International Driving Permit carried with your Indian licence; the Indian licence is not accepted on its own here. The IDP is a translation of your home licence, so it only works when presented together with it and your passport. Arrange the IDP in India before you fly, as you cannot obtain one in Macau. The one piece of good news: no side switch

India drives on the left and so does Macau — the same as Hong Kong next door. That removes the single biggest hazard most Indian drivers face abroad: there is no reversed roundabout, no wrong-way reflex at junctions. What replaces it is density. Macau is tiny and intensely built up, with narrow one-way streets, heavy scooter traffic and limited, expensive parking. For most visitors taxis, the casino shuttles and walking get you around faster than a hire car, and the bridges to Taipa and Cotai are easy to navigate without one.

The drink-drive limit is 0.05, above India’s 0.03, and a compact, heavily policed territory means enforcement is close at hand — treat it as no alcohol before driving. The emergency number is 999. Keep your passport, IDP and licence on you, because document checks are routine.
