UK Photocard in Lithuania 2026: No IDP, 0.04% Alcohol Limit

Yes, you can drive in Lithuania on a UK licence. GOV.UK’s travel advice states that a UK photocard licence is valid there, so no International Driving Permit is needed. The one condition the Foreign Office adds is easy to overlook: the name and address on the card must be correct. If you have moved house and not told the DVLA, sort that first. Holders of an old paper licence are the exception and may need to update it or carry an IDP.

The photocard rule in full

There is not much more to it than that. The UK and Lithuania both belong to the 1968 Vienna Convention, the treaty under which each country recognises the other’s national licence for visitors. Where friction appears, it usually comes from the hire desk rather than the law. GOV.UK warns that rental companies often set tougher terms than the state, such as a year of driving experience or a higher minimum age. A driver who passed the test last summer is legal on the road but may be turned away at the counter, so read the small print before you book.

Bringing your own car from Britain

Some drivers make the long overland trip through Germany and Poland. If that is you, three things are different from a hire:

• The UK sticker. GOV.UK tells drivers to check whether they need one before leaving, depending on what the number plate shows.
• A right-hand-drive car on right-hand roads. You sit next to the verge, so your view past a lorry is poor. Drop back further than feels natural before overtaking, or let a passenger call it.
• Tyres by date, not by weather. More on that below.

How strict is the alcohol limit?

Much stricter than at home. Lithuania allows 0.04% for experienced drivers and 0.00% for new drivers, motorcyclists, taxi drivers and lorry drivers, according to Global Affairs Canada. England and Wales sit at 0.08%. GOV.UK’s own wording is that the limits are stricter than in the UK and that being over can mean a heavy fine and imprisonment. Canada adds that police may confiscate the licence and the vehicle at the roadside. With margins this thin, pick one each day: drink or drive.

Speeds in mph

These are the WHO profile figures. The motorway limit is higher than the UK’s 70 mph, the rural one slightly lower than a British single carriageway’s 60 mph. If your own car has a mph-dominant speedometer, the small inner km/h ring is the one to watch.

The winter calendar

Lithuania fixes winter tyres to the calendar: 10 November to 31 March, with at least 3 mm of tread. The date counts, not the forecast, so a dry week in late November does not let you off. Studded tyres have their own window, 1 November to 9 April. Most British cars run summer or all-season tyres, which makes this the rule most likely to catch a driver arriving in late autumn. Dark verges and one number

Away from towns, roads can be unlit, and Lithuanian law requires pedestrians on them to wear small reflectors after dark.
