Can an American Drive in Libya? — IDP Recommended & a Zero Alcohol Limit

Libya is not a routine self-drive destination, and any American planning to drive there should check current US government travel advice before anything else. With that caveat front and centre, here is the licence verdict and the facts that are known.

An American licence holder can use their US licence as the basis for driving, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP is a recognised translation that smooths matters at checkpoints and with any vehicle provider; arrange it in the US before you travel, because you cannot obtain one in Libya.

For American drivers there is one genuine piece of good news: Libya drives on the right, the same as the US, so there is no side switch to manage — no reversed roundabouts and no instinctive glance the wrong way. That removes the hazard that catches out most overseas drivers.

The rule to internalise is alcohol. Libya is a dry country by law and the drink-drive limit is effectively zero — there is no 0.08 margin of the kind you have at home. Do not drink at all if you are going to drive.

Beyond that, treat posted speeds as guidance rather than guarantees: built-up areas are signed around 50 km/h, open roads near 85, and the limited dual carriageways around 100 km/h, but surfaces and signage vary and local driving can be unpredictable. Drive to the road in front of you. Fuel is among the cheapest anywhere at roughly $0.03 a litre, and the emergency number commonly given is 112.
