Can an American Drive in Liberia? — IDP Advised, Right-Hand Traffic

Liberia shares historical ties with the United States, and for American drivers one practical legacy is a familiar driving side. An honest page serves you better here than a padded one: the licence is simple, but the roads and the seasons are not.

The verdict for US licence holders

An American licence holder can drive in Liberia, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry beside it. The IDP is a recognised translation of your US licence, useful at the roadblocks you will encounter. Keep the IDP, your American licence and your passport together, and obtain the permit in the US before you travel — it is not issued locally.

A genuine advantage: the same driving side

Liberia drives on the right, exactly as the United States does. There is no left-hand switch to unlearn, no reversed roundabouts, no glancing the wrong way at a junction. On a road network this demanding, removing that common tourist tripwire is worth having — it lets you put your concentration where it is actually needed.

The real factor: road condition and the wet season

Posted limits are around 50 km/h in towns, 80 rural and 100 on faster roads, but the numbers are a weak guide. Outside Monrovia, surfaces are rough, and during the long rainy season (roughly May to October) unpaved roads can become difficult or impassable and a 4x4 is often essential. Drive to the road, not the sign, avoid night driving, and plan routes around the weather rather than the clock. The blood-alcohol limit is listed at 0.08, but conditions reward staying well under any limit.
