Can a British Driver Drive in Liberia? — IDP Recommended, and You Switch to the Right

Liberia rewards visitors who want to get beyond Monrovia to the coast and the rainforest, but it is a country where preparation counts. For a British driver the licence is simple to sort; the demands are the side of the road and the state of the road itself.

The verdict on your UK licence

You can drive in Liberia on your British licence with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP gives a rental firm or a roadside officer a recognisable translation of your entitlement, so carry it with your UK licence and passport. Arrange the IDP at home before you fly — it cannot be issued in Liberia.

The side switch catches British drivers out

Liberia has deep historical ties to the United States, which leads some visitors to assume American conventions all round. On the road that assumption is wrong in the way that matters: Liberia drives on the right, the opposite of the UK. Retrain the usual reflexes — pulling out, taking a junction or roundabout, and looking the correct way before you move — and take your first hour somewhere quiet rather than in Monrovia traffic.

Road quality is the real planning factor

Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the better highways, but the number is rarely the constraint. Around Monrovia the main routes are paved and manageable; head out and surfaces deteriorate fast, with unsealed sections that the rainy season can turn to mud. Plan to drive in daylight, keep journeys realistic, and choose a vehicle with the ground clearance for rough going. The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC — higher than the UK figure, but treat it as zero out here. The emergency number is 112.
