Can an American Drive in Lebanon on a US Licence? — IDP Recommended, Same Side of the Road

Lebanon is a small, dense country where a car opens up the mountains, the Bekaa Valley and the coast in a way taxis can’t. For an American driver the good news is there is no side-of-the-road switch to wrestle with — the challenge here is the driving culture and a couple of stricter rules.

Driving on your US licence

An American licence holder can drive in Lebanon, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. The IDP is not always strictly demanded, but rental desks and traffic police prefer to see one, and it functions as an official translation if your documents are questioned. Bring the IDP, your US licence and your passport together, and arrange the IDP through AAA before you leave — you cannot obtain it in Lebanon.

No side switch — but the traffic is the test

Lebanon drives on the right, the same as the United States, so unlike many destinations there is nothing to relearn about which lane you belong in. What does take adjustment is the style: Beirut traffic is assertive, lane markings are treated as suggestions, and right-of-way is often negotiated rather than signposted. Drive predictably, keep extra space, and don’t expect the orderly flow you may be used to. Outside the cities the roads open up and the mountain routes are rewarding, but watch for sharp drops and variable surfaces.

Speeds, alcohol and the practical numbers

Posted limits are 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h rural and 100 km/h on the faster roads. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, stricter than the 0.08 norm in most US states — treat it as zero given how much concentration the traffic demands. Fuel is around $0.95 a litre, among the cheaper figures you will meet, and the emergency number is 112.
