Laos with a UK Licence in 2026: a 1949 IDP Must Ride Along

A UK licence alone is not enough: carry a 1949 IDP with it, as GOV.UK advises. Laos keeps right, towns are 40 km/h, rural roads 90, and the alcohol limit is 0.05.
Laos rewards patient driving: the road from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, the limestone country around Vang Vieng, the slow river towns. It is not a place for covering big distances quickly, and the paperwork has one step British drivers often skip.

GOV.UK’s advice for Laos is direct: you need both the 1949 version of the International Driving Permit and your UK driving licence with you in the car. The permit cannot be bought outside the UK, so pick it up at a Post Office before you fly. Police may stop cars at any time, particularly in the evening, and ask for ID, so keep the permit, licence and passport together. The Driving Permit Checker confirms other cases.
Speeds: what the signs say and what the roads allow
WHO’s 2023 profile lists 40 km/h in towns and 90 km/h on rural roads. The exception is the China-Laos Expressway between Vientiane and Vang Vieng, posted at 80 to 120 km/h, where some local users are new to that kind of road. Most of the country is mountainous, so a route that looks short on the map can take most of a day. Plan in hours, not kilometres, and avoid driving after dark, when unlit vehicles and livestock make the roads markedly more dangerous.
Swapping sides
Laos drives on the right; you are coming from the left. The reflexive errors, such as wrong-way glances at junctions or drifting left after a turn, cluster in your first hour, and they are worse on a twisting mountain road than on a flat one. Ease in deliberately.
Alcohol, liability and numbers
The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, lower than the 0.08 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and level with Scotland, so do not drink before driving. After a crash a foreign driver is usually expected to pay for third-party damage even when not at fault, so check that your travel insurance covers driving. Laos does not use 112 or 999: police 1191, ambulance 1195, fire 1190.
