Laos is a slow-travel country threaded with mountain roads and the Mekong, and many visitors get around by scooter or hired driver. If you do take the wheel of a car, the licence answer is simple and the road realities are where the care goes.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Laos on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. There’s no EU-style automatic recognition, so the IDP serves as the translation a checkpoint or hire desk will want to see. India drives on the left; Laos drives on the right. That reversal is the main mechanical change, and the first day is when the old reflex bites — at junctions, pulling out, and on roundabouts that now flow the opposite way. Town limits are a low 40 km/h, with rural roads around 60 km/h — gentle numbers that reflect reality, because outside the main towns surfaces are narrow, winding and often shared with bikes, livestock and slow trucks.
