Kuwait is a common posting and stopover for Indian travellers, and renting a car there is straightforward — provided you have the one document the law insists on.

Can you drive on your Indian licence?

Yes, as a visitor, but with a condition: you must hold an International Driving Permit alongside your Indian licence. This is one of the corridors where the IDP is genuinely required rather than merely recommended, so do not skip it. Arrange the IDP in India before departure — it cannot be issued once you arrive. The side switch is the first hazard

India keeps left; Kuwait drives on the right. That reversal is the thing most likely to trip you, and the danger window is your opening hour — joining a multi-lane roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance in the wrong direction at a junction. Kuwait City’s wide, fast, busy highways are not the place to find your feet, so take the first stretch somewhere quiet and be deliberate at every turn until it stops feeling backwards.

A genuine zero on alcohol

Kuwait’s drink-drive limit is 0.0, and this is not the usual “treat it as zero” caution — alcohol is illegal throughout the country, full stop. There is no permitted trace, no one-drink allowance, and enforcement is serious. If you are driving in Kuwait, alcohol simply is not part of the day.

Speeds and the practical bits

Posted limits run to about 45 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on the motorways — follow the signs, as enforcement by camera is widespread. Fuel is famously cheap at roughly $0.35 a litre. The emergency number is 112.
