Can an Indian Drive in Kosovo? — Yes with an IDP, Side Switch + Green Card Insurance

Kosovo is an easy, cheap and increasingly popular Balkan self-drive, and for an Indian visitor the licence is rarely the sticking point. The thing that quietly causes trouble at the border and the rental desk is insurance, not the permit.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in Kosovo?

Yes. Your Indian licence is accepted for a tourist visit, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. Rental desks in Pristina and roadside police prefer to see the IDP alongside your Indian licence and passport. Get the IDP from your RTO in India before you fly — it cannot be obtained locally. So “driving in Kosovo on an Indian licence” answers yes, with the IDP as the document that keeps any check brief.

The side switch, then the insurance catch

India drives on the left; Kosovo drives on the right. Take your first drive on quiet roads before joining Pristina’s traffic. But the genuinely unusual issue with Kosovo is vehicle insurance: it sits outside the standard European Green Card zone, so if you hire a car elsewhere in the Balkans and drive in, your cover may not extend here, and short-term border insurance is sometimes sold at the crossing. If you rent within Kosovo this is handled for you — but always confirm the policy covers Kosovo specifically, and keep the insurance paper with your documents, because that is what is asked for at checkpoints.

Speeds and alcohol

Limits are 50 km/h in town, 80 rural and a fast 130 on the modern R6 and R7 motorways linking Pristina toward the borders — newer and faster than much of India’s network. The alcohol limit is 0.05, low enough that you should not drink before driving; weekend checks are common. Carry a warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher, which the law requires.

Fuel is around $1.42 a litre and the emergency number is 112. Carry IDP, Indian licence, passport and the insurance document together.
