Can a Brit Drive in Kenya? — Yes, IDP Required, and It's Left-Hand Like Home

Kenya is one of the few long-haul self-drive destinations where a British visitor does not have to relearn the side of the road. That single fact makes it far less daunting than it first looks — but the IDP rule here is stricter than for most countries, so it is worth getting right.

The verdict: IDP required, licence valid

A British licence holder can drive in Kenya, but an International Driving Permit is required — this is one of the destinations where “recommended” doesn’t cover it. Carry the IDP with your UK licence and passport, or arrange a temporary Kenyan driving permit on arrival. Your home licence is accepted for around three months. Get the IDP before you fly; it cannot be issued in Kenya, and car-hire firms and insurers will often refuse to hand over a vehicle without one. Drive without it and a roadside stop can cost in the region of KES 10,000-20,000.

You keep to the left — that’s the easy part

Kenya drives on the left, the same as the UK. There is no side switch, no reversed roundabouts, no retraining your instincts at junctions. For a British driver that removes the biggest single risk of driving abroad, so you can put your attention where it actually belongs: the traffic and the road surface.

What actually catches British drivers out

The hazards here are human and natural, not legal. Matatu minibuses stop suddenly, overtake aggressively and treat lane markings as suggestions — give them room. On rural roads, wildlife genuinely wanders onto the carriageway, and road quality swings from smooth highway to deep potholes within a few kilometres. Speeds run 50 km/h in towns, up to 100 on rural roads and 110 on the better highways, but condition, not the sign, should set your pace. The drink-drive limit is 0.08, the same as England and Wales. Fuel is around $1.35 a litre, and 112 reaches the emergency services.
