Quick Answer

Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Kazakhstan, with an International Driving Permit recommended to sit alongside it. There is no side switch (both countries drive on the right), so the real adjustments are a fast 140 km/h motorway limit and a far stricter 0.03 alcohol limit than the 0.08 you know at home.

Kazakhstan is one of the few long-haul drives that gets easier for an American the moment you sit down: you stay on the right, just like at home. The country is vast — Astana to Almaty is over 1,200 km — and a car opens up steppe, mountains and Soviet-era towns that no tour bus reaches. The paperwork and the habits, not the side of the road, are what need attention.

Can you drive in Kazakhstan on a US licence?

Yes. Your American licence is accepted for visitors, and an IDP is recommended rather than legally unavoidable. The reason is practical: your US licence is printed in Latin script, while Kazakh traffic police work in Cyrillic and Kazakh. The IDP is the certified translation that makes a roadside stop or a rental-desk check go smoothly. Sort it before you fly — you cannot obtain one inside Kazakhstan — and carry it with your licence and passport. Confirm exactly what your trip needs with the Driving Permit Checker.

No side switch — but the speeds are higher

Because both countries drive on the right, you skip the disorientation most American drivers face abroad. What you don’t skip is pace. Kazakhstan’s motorway limit is 140 km/h — well above the typical US interstate — and the new Astana–Almaty and Almaty–Khorgos corridors are built for it. Towns are 60 km/h and rural roads 90 km/h. The newest highways are excellent; older regional roads are not, with potholes, unfenced livestock and long unlit stretches, so the posted number is a ceiling, not a target. Check the Speed Limit Map before a long leg.

The alcohol limit is the real trap

This is where US habits bite. Kazakhstan runs a 0.03 blood-alcohol limit against the 0.08 you’re used to — less than half. There is no “one beer is fine” margin here; if you are driving, don’t drink. Enforcement at checkpoints is routine, and penalties run to heavy fines and licence confiscation.

Before you collect the car

  • Carry your US licence, IDP and passport together; rental desks expect all three.
  • Fuel is cheap — around $0.45/litre — so distance is affordable; range between stations on the steppe is the real constraint, so fill up when you can.
  • The emergency number is 112. Mobile signal drops fast outside the cities, so download offline maps before you set off.
  • Read the full rules on our Kazakhstan driving guide before you go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. American licence holders can drive in Kazakhstan on their US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it because your licence is in English and Latin script, not the Cyrillic and Kazakh that police read. Keep the IDP, your US licence and passport together.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes. Both Kazakhstan and the United States drive on the right, so there is no side switch to relearn — one of the few things that makes Kazakhstan an easier transition than most overseas trips for American drivers.

Kazakhstan's blood-alcohol limit is 0.03, far below the 0.08 you are used to at home. With the margin that tight, treat it as zero before driving; penalties are severe and can include licence confiscation.
