Kazakhstan on an Indian Licence 2026: 110 km/h Open Roads

Kazakhstan’s road traffic law puts the international permit in a supporting role: under article 73, a permit issued abroad counts only when shown with the matching national licence, and a foreign licence that does not meet Kazakhstan’s treaty requirements is invalid. That matters for Indian drivers because India issues the 1949 Geneva permit while Kazakhstan is a party to the 1968 Vienna convention. Ask the hire company in writing which documents it accepts before booking, and carry the permit, your Indian licence and your passport together. The UK government, for comparison, tells British drivers they need a 1968 permit.

The side switch and the open road

India drives on the left; Kazakhstan drives on the right. Get used to it on quiet roads first: roundabouts flow the other way and your glance at junctions needs retraining. Limits are 60 km/h in towns and 110 km/h outside built-up areas, and the highest motorway limit is 140 km/h. Signs can set lower figures. The open steppe produces long, monotonous stretches where fatigue is the real danger, so plan breaks.

Alcohol and police stops

The WHO’s 2023 country profile records Kazakhstan’s blood-alcohol limit as 0.05 g/dl. India’s Motor Vehicles Act sets 30 mg per 100 ml, so the Indian rule is the stricter one. Do not drink at all before driving. If traffic police stop you for an offence, the UK government says they should give you an official paper.

Winter and services

Snow, ice and low visibility make winter roads hazardous, with multi-car crashes reported. Ask for a hire car fitted for winter between autumn and spring, and avoid driving in bad weather. Stations thin out between cities, so fill up whenever you can. Call 112 for the emergency and rescue service, 102 for police, 103 for an ambulance and 101 for fire.
