Driving in Jersey on a UK Licence 2026: Paycards, Not Meters

Driving in Jersey is about as close to home as a British driver gets outside the UK. The paperwork is simple, the side of the road is the same, and the drink-drive figure is the one used in England. What changes is the scale of the roads and the way you pay to park.

Your licence is enough

The Government of Jersey’s licensing page says a visitor can drive with a valid licence from another country for the category of vehicle being driven. A Jersey licence is needed only by people becoming resident or staying more than 12 months. There is no International Driving Permit to arrange; carry your photocard with your hire documents. The same limit as England

Jersey sets the limit at 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, or 35 µg per 100 ml of breath. That is the England, Wales and Northern Ireland figure and higher than Scotland’s 50 mg. Traffic keeps to the left, so there is no side switch. Many lanes away from the main roads are narrow and lined with walls or banks; give way early and expect walkers, cyclists and horses round blind bends.

Parking: paycards, discs or an app

Meters are not the main system. The island’s car parks and streets use paycards, parking discs in disc zones, and the PayByPhone app, with season tickets for long stays.
