Jersey is a self-governing Crown Dependency in the Channel Islands — close to France, but British in its driving habits — and for an Indian visitor it’s one of the more familiar places to take the wheel. The single thing most tourists from right-hand-drive countries dread, the side switch, simply doesn’t apply here.

Can an Indian drive on an Indian licence?

Yes. Jersey accepts an Indian licence for a visitor’s stay, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it — it gives rental desks and any roadside officer a clear translation of your entitlement. Keep the IDP, your licence and your passport together, and arrange the IDP at home before you travel rather than counting on getting one on the island.

The relief: same side as home

India drives on the left, and so does Jersey — there’s no left-to-right adjustment to make, and your instincts at junctions and roundabouts carry over intact. That removes the biggest single risk most Indian drivers face abroad, and it’s the reason driving here feels natural almost immediately.

What actually challenges visitors: the lanes

The real adjustment in Jersey isn’t a rule, it’s the geography. Many of the island’s roads are extremely narrow, hedged or walled on both sides, with frequent “Green Lanes” where pedestrians, cyclists and horses take priority and a low limit applies. Pace yourself, use the passing places, and don’t expect to cover distance quickly — the island is small, so there’s no need to. The alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC; with towns easily walkable, leaving the car for any drinking evening is the obvious call.
