🇯🇲 Can I Drive in Jamaica on a US License? Yes +IDP

Jamaica rewards drivers willing to leave the resort — the Blue Mountains, the north coast, the back roads to waterfalls — but for an American the experience starts with two adjustments that have nothing to do with paperwork.

The licence answer for Americans

You can drive in Jamaica on your US licence as a visitor for short stays. Carry an International Driving Permit with it: the IDP is a recognised translation that car-hire desks and police prefer to see alongside your US licence and passport. Arrange it in the US before you fly, because it cannot be issued in Jamaica, and keep all three documents together.

Driving on the left is the part to prepare for

Jamaica drives on the left — the reverse of the United States. This is the single biggest hazard for an American driver, and the danger window is your first day: pulling out of a forecourt, joining a roundabout that turns the “wrong” way, or the instinctive glance in the wrong direction. Start somewhere quiet rather than in Montego Bay or Kingston traffic, and consciously keep left until the reflex flips.

Busy roads, assertive driving, modest speeds

Limits are low — about 40 km/h in towns, 60 km/h on rural roads and 80 km/h on the highways, including the tolled north–south route. But the numbers undersell the experience: town roads are narrow, often potholed, and shared with pedestrians, handcarts and confident local drivers who overtake freely and use the horn as a signal, not an insult. Drive defensively and do not rush. The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, the same as much of the US, yet on unfamiliar left-hand roads the safe line is zero. A minor speeding fine runs around JMD 3,000–6,000 (≈ €18–36), and fuel costs roughly $1.25 a litre.
