US License in Jamaica 2026: Keep Left, 50 km/h in Towns

The licence answer for Americans

Visitors drive on their home licence. The UK and Canadian governments both say their licences can be used in Jamaica for up to six months, after which a Jamaican licence is needed, and neither mentions an international permit. A US licence is in English, so the AAA permit, a 1949-model IDP that Jamaica recognises as a party to that convention, is an optional back-up for rental desks rather than a legal must. Driving on the left

This is the single biggest hazard for an American driver, and the danger window is your first day: pulling out of a forecourt, joining a roundabout that turns the “wrong” way, or the instinctive glance in the wrong direction. Start somewhere quiet rather than in Montego Bay or Kingston traffic. UK advice goes further for the capital: if you are unfamiliar with Kingston, do not drive in the city.

Speeds, alcohol and fines

Limits are 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h outside them under the 2022 regulations; the toll highway posts its own limits. Town roads are narrow and often potholed, and police run checkpoints, common on the A1 north coast highway; stop and cooperate. The WHO profile gives an alcohol limit of 0.08%, the figure most US states use, but on unfamiliar left-hand roads the safe line is zero. Under the Road Traffic Act 2018, speeding 16-32 km/h over costs JMD 6,000 and 2 demerit points, and 33-49 km/h over JMD 10,000 and 4 points.
