Quick Answer

Indian licence holders can drive in Italy with an IDP recommended alongside the licence. Two things catch Indian drivers — switching from left- to right-hand traffic, and the camera-controlled ZTL zones in historic city centres that issue fines by post long after you have gone home.

Italy is one of the great self-drive countries, but for an Indian visitor it stacks two specific traps on top of the usual learning curve — and the second one bills you by post weeks after the holiday is over.

The first is the side of the road. India drives on the left; Italy drives on the right. Your reflexes will fight you on day one — pulling out of a fuel station, judging a roundabout that now flows clockwise, glancing the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than in Rome or Naples traffic, and stay deliberate until the new geometry feels normal.

The second is the trap no one warns you about: the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato). Almost every historic centre — Florence, Rome, Milan, Bologna and dozens of smaller towns — is ringed by camera-controlled zones that only permit-holders may enter. There is no barrier and often only a small sign; you drive in chasing your hotel’s GPS pin, a camera reads your plate, and a fine of roughly €80–100 lands at the car’s registered address weeks later, passed on by the rental firm with an admin charge on top. Park outside the centre and walk in. Our Italy driving guide lists the cities where ZTLs catch the most visitors.

Beyond the ZTL, Italy is a heavily camera-enforced country. Fixed and average-speed cameras blanket the autostrade, where the limit is 130 km/h (rural roads 90, towns 50). A 10 km/h overshoot typically costs €42–173; you can model it with the speeding fine calculator, and since these arrive through the hire company, read who pays driving fines abroad before you collect the keys.

On alcohol the limit is 0.05, higher than India’s 0.03, but with this density of enforcement there is no upside to testing it — keep to zero. Confirm your IDP status with the driving permit checker. The car must carry a warning triangle and reflective vest, and the emergency number is 112.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).

  • Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Italy sets no separate winter figure.
  • Accepted marking: M+S / MS / M-S / M&S (3PMSF not required)
  • Studded tyres: restricted
  • Penalty: €87–345

In Italian the rule is pneumatici invernali, and snow chains are catene da neve — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with an International Driving Permit carried alongside your Indian licence. The IDP acts as the official translation Italy expects from non-EU drivers; rental desks and police look for it.

Check if your licence is valid

A ZTL is a limited-traffic zone in a historic city centre, enforced by cameras. Driving in without a permit triggers an automatic fine that reaches your address weeks later — often the single most expensive mistake a visitor makes.

Check emission zone requirements

Italy's limit is 0.05 BAC, higher than India's 0.03, but cameras and roadside checks are everywhere. The safe approach is none before driving.
