Yes, for up to one year, but only with an IDP or certified Italian translation alongside your Canadian licence; driving without one risks a EUR 408-1,634 fine. Then stay out of ZTL centres (EUR 83-332) and under 0.5 g/l.
Canadians can drive in Italy, for up to one year, on a valid Canadian licence, provided it travels with an International Driving Permit or a certified Italian translation. That is Global Affairs Canada’s wording, and article 135 of Italy’s Highway Code says the same for every non-EU licence. Leave the permit at home and you risk a fine of EUR 408-1,634. Sort it out in Canada before the flight, and keep it with your licence and passport.
There is no side switch: Italy drives on the right, as Canada does. The adjustment is elsewhere.
The permit is a condition, not a courtesy
A rental desk that hands over keys on the Canadian card alone has not made the drive legal; the fine falls on the driver at a roadside check. The IDP must come from the country that issued your licence, under a convention Italy has joined, so it has to be arranged in Canada. A provincial licence from Ontario, British Columbia or Quebec is treated the same way. A certified Italian translation does the same legal job, but it has to be prepared before you travel; for a short trip the IDP is usually the simpler of the two.
What Canada’s own advice warns about
Ottawa’s advice for Italy is unusually candid about the roads:
- Around major cities, roads are generally good; in rural areas they may be poorly maintained.
- City streets are narrow and congested, and signs, lights and markings may be hard to see, especially in the south.
- Mountain roads are winding and narrow. Avalanches and landslides can cut off towns and ski resorts.
- Motorcycles and scooters weave between vehicles and even ride on pavements. Speeding is common.
Its practical advice: drive defensively, plan the route ahead, especially in the countryside, do not stop on the road to help others, and do not pick up hitchhikers.
The ZTL is the expensive mistake
Most historic centres sit behind a ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato): a red-circle sign, a camera, and a list of authorised plates. Entering without authorisation costs EUR 83-332 under article 7 comma 14. From 14 December 2024, driving through the same zone several times in one day counts once; come back the next day, or try the next town, and the meter starts again. Canada warns that tickets can arrive months after you are home, because rental firms hand your details to the police. Italian speeding fines scale sharply:

Paying within 5 days brings a 30% discount on the two lowest bands, not where a suspension applies. A handheld phone costs EUR 250-1,000 plus a suspension of 15 days to 2 months. Running a red light is EUR 167-665; no seatbelt, EUR 83-333.
Lower alcohol margin
Italy’s limit is 0.5 g/l, and zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years of holding a licence. Canada’s Criminal Code line is 80 mg per 100 ml, so the Italian limit arrives sooner than a Canadian driver expects.
Emergencies
112 works everywhere. Italy also keeps separate lines: 113 for police, 118 for an ambulance and 115 for the fire service. Put them in your phone before the first day out.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Italy sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: M+S / MS / M-S / M&S (3PMSF not required)
