Israel is a compact country to drive, with good main roads, short distances and signs that often include English. For an American visitor, the paperwork and the side of the road are familiar; the differences are in the details.
The verdict for US licence holders
Carry an International Driving Permit from AAA alongside your US licence and passport. Israel and the United States are both parties to the 1949 Geneva convention, under which Israel recognises that permit, and the UK government tells its own drivers they need an IDP to drive there. The rule that’s stricter than home: alcohol
Israel’s limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers, against the 0.08% standard across US states, and 0.01% for young or novice drivers. A second drink at dinner can be enough to put you over, so if you are driving later, do not drink.
Speeds, police and where not to drive
WHO records 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Police run radar speed traps on some roads and issue heavy fines. Erratic driving and poorly maintained vehicles cause frequent accidents, so leave room in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem traffic. Avoid driving into ultra-Orthodox areas of Jerusalem on Shabbat, from sunset on Friday to nightfall on Saturday, when residents may throw stones at cars. If you plan to drive into the West Bank, check that your hire insurance covers it, as some firms exclude it. In the desert, travel with others, take water and a phone, and tell someone your route. Call 100 for the police, 101 for an ambulance and 102 for the fire service.
