Israel is a compact, easy country to drive — good roads, short distances and signs that switch readily to English. For an American visitor the licence rules are friendly, and the few differences from home are easy to plan around.

The verdict for US licence holders

An American licence is valid for tourists in Israel for up to one year, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go with it. The IDP is not always demanded, but rental desks prefer to see it, and it pre-empts any question at a checkpoint. Carry the IDP, your US licence and your passport together. There is no side switch to worry about — Israel drives on the right, like the US — so you can focus on the rules rather than relearning the road.

The one rule that’s stricter than home: alcohol

The clearest difference from the US is the drink-drive limit. Israel sets 0.05 blood-alcohol against the 0.08 standard across US states. It is not a dramatic gap, but it is enough that a second drink at dinner could put you over. The safe approach is one drink at most, or none if you are driving later that evening.

Speeds, equipment and the practical picture

Posted limits run 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open rural roads and 110 km/h on motorways — broadly in line with what you know, just in km/h. Your hire car must carry the required safety kit (warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit); driving without it risks a fine of around ILS 250 (≈ $70), so check the boot before you leave the lot. Fuel is on the dearer side at roughly $1.95 a litre. The main everyday challenge is city traffic — Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are busy and local driving is assertive, so leave room and don’t take aggressive lane changes personally.
