Can an Indian Drive in Israel? — IDP Recommended, the Side Switch & a 0.05 Limit

Israel is one of the easier Middle Eastern countries for an Indian visitor to self-drive: distances are short, the road network is modern, and the rental process is familiar. The paperwork rarely causes trouble. What actually demands attention is the side of the road and an alcohol limit that is tighter than the one you drive under at home.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Israel on your Indian licence. The licence is accepted for tourists for up to one year, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go with it — not always demanded by law, but rental desks and roadside police prefer the certified translation of a non-Latin licence. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport as a set, and sort the IDP in India before you fly, because you cannot obtain one once you arrive. For anything beyond a year you would need to look at a local conversion, but that is well past a normal trip.

The biggest adjustment: driving on the right

India drives on the left; Israel drives on the right. This is the change most likely to catch you out, and the risk is concentrated in your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Spend your opening hour on quiet roads rather than central Jerusalem or Tel Aviv traffic, and stay deliberate at every turn until the new orientation stops feeling backwards.

An alcohol limit stricter than home

Israel’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, and while that looks higher than India’s 0.03 on paper, enforcement is strict and the safest approach is simply not to drink before driving. There is no comfortable “one drink” margin. A driver caught over the limit faces fines and possible licence suspension, and checks are common at night and around the weekend.

Speeds, fuel and the small print

Town limits are typically 50 km/h, open roads 80, and motorways 110. Adjust your cruise control down from the higher motorway speeds you may be used to. Fuel is not cheap at roughly $1.95/litre, so factor that into a longer itinerary. If you are stopped for speeding, the baseline penalty for a modest overage runs from around ILS 250 (≈ €60). The emergency number for police is 100.
