Ireland on a Spanish Licence — No IDP, and Only One Thing Really Changes

Most countries throw several adjustments at a visiting driver. Ireland gives Spanish drivers almost a clean slate — the numbers you already know mostly carry over, which is exactly why the one thing that does change deserves your full attention.

Almost everything matches

Your Spanish licence is an EU licence, valid in Ireland with no IDP — bring it with your passport and the paperwork is done. The motorway limit is the same 120 km/h you drive at home, and the drink-drive limit is identical at 0.05 BAC. The one real change: driving on the left

Spain drives on the right; Ireland drives on the left. With so much else familiar, this is where your concentration belongs, because it’s easy to relax and let a reflex catch you out — at a petrol-station exit, on a roundabout that now turns clockwise, or in a glance the wrong way at a junction. Take your first hour somewhere quiet, keep the centre line on your right shoulder, and stay deliberate at every turn until the pattern locks in.

Where Ireland still surprises

The rural roads are the practical difference: narrow, hedge-lined, often without markings, and barely wide enough for two cars. Slow right down when you meet oncoming traffic and use the passing bays. Roundabouts come thick and fast, including small ones in towns — signal early and give way to traffic already on them.

Fines, fuel and numbers

Limits run 50 km/h in towns, 80 rural, 120 on motorways, enforced by fixed cameras and mobile patrols.
