Ireland asks nothing extra of a Polish licence holder at the hire desk. On the road, though, two habits need unlearning: the side you drive on and the cruising speed you are used to on a Polish autostrada.
Paperwork
Citizens Information says an EU or EEA licence can be used in Ireland for as long as it is valid. Your Polish licence is therefore enough, with no international permit. The Driving Permit Checker confirms the position for other countries on your route.
Keeping left
Poland keeps right; Ireland keeps left. Roundabouts run clockwise and you give way to traffic from the right. The first hour is the risky one, especially at junction exits and in empty roads where nothing reminds you. Rural roads are often narrow and bordered by hedges, so slow down for oncoming traffic.
Limits and penalties
Ireland’s motorways stop at 120 km/h, well below Poland’s 140. National primary roads are 100, national secondary roads 80, rural local roads 60 since 7 February 2025, and towns 50. Alcohol
