Ireland on a Polish Licence — No IDP, the Side Switch & a 120 km/h Ceiling

Ireland asks nothing of Polish drivers at the rental desk, but it does ask you to unlearn two habits on the road — one about the side you drive on, the other about how fast you’re used to going.

No permit needed

The switch to the left

Poland drives on the right; Ireland drives on the left. This is the change that matters most, and it’s sharpest in your first hour — at junction exits, on roundabouts now flowing clockwise, and in the instinctive glance the wrong way. Choose a quiet road to begin, keep the centre line on your right, and stay deliberate at every turn until it feels natural.

Slower motorways than home

Poland runs one of Europe’s highest motorway limits at 140 km/h; Ireland caps it at 120. That’s a real drop, so reset the cruise control and don’t drift into Polish-motorway speeds — cameras here are unforgiving. Off the motorways, rural lanes are narrow and hedge-lined, often unmarked, where two cars barely pass; slow right down for oncoming traffic. One bonus: the drink-drive limit is looser, 0.05 BAC against Poland’s 0.02, though enforcement is still firm.

Fines, fuel and emergencies
