Quick Answer

A Dutch licence holder can drive in Ireland with no International Driving Permit — your EU licence is fully valid. The real change is switching from right- to left-hand traffic and trading the well-ordered Dutch road network for narrow, twisting Irish rural lanes.

Dutch drivers are used to one of the best-organised road networks in the world. Ireland is the gentle opposite — legally effortless to drive in, but built on narrow, hedge-lined lanes that ask for a different kind of attention than the Netherlands ever did.

Your licence is all you need

As an EU citizen, your Dutch licence is fully valid in Ireland with no International Driving Permit required. There is nothing to organise in advance; just bring the licence and your passport. That makes the Netherlands one of the simplest origins for driving in Ireland — the legal question is settled before you arrive, so the road is your only focus.

Left-hand traffic is the first hurdle

The Netherlands drives on the right; Ireland drives on the left. The reversal is most dangerous in the automatic moments — joining a roundabout that now turns clockwise, pulling out of a junction, or glancing the wrong way before a turn. The driver sits on the right of the car, which changes how you judge your nearside. Give yourself a quiet first hour rather than starting in Dublin, and stay deliberate at every manoeuvre until left-side driving settles.

Narrow lanes after the Dutch grid

This is where Irish driving differs most from home. Away from the motorways — where the 120 km/h limit is a touch higher than the Dutch 100 — rural roads are often single-track, walled or hedged with poor visibility, and you’ll meet tractors, cyclists and oncoming cars around blind bends. Roundabouts do most of the work at junctions, so be ready to give way to the right. Town limit is 50 km/h, rural 80. Enforcement uses fixed cameras and mobile patrols, and a standard speeding offence is a EUR 80 fixed charge plus three penalty points.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Netherlands is in the EU, so your national licence is fully valid in Ireland with no International Driving Permit needed. Bring the licence and your passport.

Check if your licence is valid

No. The Netherlands drives on the right and Ireland on the left, so a side switch is the main adjustment, especially at roundabouts and junctions.

Irish motorways are easy, but rural roads are far narrower and less predictable than the orderly Dutch network — expect single-track lanes, blind bends and frequent roundabouts.
