Ireland on an Italian Licence — Valid With No IDP, but You Drive on the Left

Driving on the left

Italy drives on the right; Ireland drives on the left. This is the heart of the adjustment, and it bites hardest in the first hour — at junction exits, at roundabouts now turning clockwise, and in the reflex glance the wrong way. Pick a quiet road to start, keep the centre line on your right, and stay deliberate at every turn until your instincts catch up.

A calmer pace, narrower roads

After the autostrada, Ireland feels gentle: the motorway ceiling is 120 km/h and traffic is generally more orderly than Italian city driving. The trade-off is the rural network — narrow, hedge-lined lanes, often unmarked, where passing an oncoming car means slowing right down and using a layby. Roundabouts are everywhere, including small ones in towns; signal early and give way to traffic already on them.

Fines, fuel and emergencies

Limits run 50 km/h urban, 80 rural, 120 on motorways, with fixed cameras and mobile patrols. The drink-drive limit matches home at 0.05 BAC.
