Ireland on an Indian Licence — Same Side as Home, but Carry an IDP

Most guides to driving abroad open with a warning about switching sides of the road. For an Indian visitor to Ireland, that warning doesn’t apply — and that single fact makes this one of the most comfortable foreign drives you can take.

Ireland drives on the left, exactly like India, and your rental will be right-hand drive with the gearstick on your left, just as you’re used to. The instinct that takes most foreign drivers a tense day to rewire is already correct in your hands. That frees you to focus on the parts of Irish driving that genuinely differ, and the first is the roundabout. They are everywhere, often two or three in quick succession at the edge of a town, and you give way to traffic already on the roundabout coming from your right. Signal early, pick your exit, and they quickly become second nature.

The second adjustment is the rural road. Leave a motorway and the lanes shrink fast — hedge-lined, single-track in places, with stone walls close on either side. A sign may read 80 km/h, but a blind bend with an oncoming car is not an 80 km/h road; drive to what you can see and pull into a gateway to let locals pass, which is normal courtesy here. Motorways run up to 120 km/h and are well surfaced, with cameras and patrols active; a fixed speeding charge is around EUR 80 plus three penalty points.

The alcohol limit is 0.05 BAC, higher than India’s 0.03 but punished severely — an automatic ban on a first offence — and just 0.02 for newer drivers, so the only safe figure is zero.
