A valid French licence is enough in Ireland, with no permit. The challenge is the side: traffic keeps left and roundabouts turn clockwise. Speeding is a EUR 160 fixed charge plus 3 points.
For a French driver the paperwork for Ireland could hardly be simpler. The driving itself is another matter: everything is mirrored, and the reflexes built on French roads point the wrong way for the first day or two. No permit, but a full mental reset
Citizens Information, the Irish state information service, says a driving licence issued by an EU or EEA member state can be used in Ireland while it is valid. A French licence needs no International Driving Permit, no translation and nothing extra; carry it with your passport. That is where the easy part ends, because Ireland drives on the left.
Living on the left
The motorway is the easy bit. The risk sits in small decisions: pulling out of a petrol station onto the correct side, looking the right way at a junction, and entering a roundabout that turns clockwise, where you give way to traffic from the right. In a hire car the gear lever is under your left hand. Spend the first hour on quiet roads rather than in central Dublin.

Off the main routes, Irish roads are narrow, often hedged on both sides, with blind bends and tractors. Since 7 February 2025 the default on rural local roads is 60 km/h. The motorway figure is 10 km/h below France’s 130.
What a ticket looks like
A speeding offence in Ireland is a fixed charge of EUR 160 plus 3 penalty points, rising to EUR 240 if unpaid after 28 days. That is far above the EUR 68 a French radar ticket costs for up to 20 km/h over. The other offences go the opposite way:

A first hour that goes well
Pick up the car in daylight, sit in it for a few minutes with the engine off, and find the indicator, wipers and gear lever before you move. Ireland’s hire fleet is right-hand drive, so the clutch and brake pedals are where you expect them, but the gear lever is on your left. Leave the airport by the signed route, stay in the left lane and follow the car in front for the first few junctions. A short loop of the car park helps more than any amount of reading.
Drink-driving, kit and emergencies
The general drink-drive limit is 0.05, the same as in France, with lower limits for learners, drivers in their first two years and professional drivers. Ireland has no required equipment list beyond recommendations, whereas France requires a reflective vest and a warning triangle in the car; a Frenchman who carries both is not wrong, just not obliged. Emergencies are 112, the number you know, and Ireland has no separate police, ambulance and fire numbers on our record, unlike France’s 17, 15 and 18.

Share the driving if you can: the second driver can call out lane position at junctions while the first adapts. Both drivers need to hold a licence and be named on the rental agreement, so check that before you sign. Bring the same documents for each of you, and keep them out of the boot.
