Self-driving in Iraq is not a typical tourist trip, and the honest first step is not the licence — it is the travel advisory. Before anything else, check your government’s current guidance for the specific region you are heading to, because conditions vary widely across the country and change over time. With that done, here is what is known about the driving itself.

The licence question

An American can, in principle, drive in Iraq with an International Driving Permit carried alongside the US licence and passport. The IDP gives officials a recognised translation of your credentials, which matters at checkpoints. That said, formal requirements differ by region and are not always consistently applied, and a great many visitors hire a car with a local driver rather than self-drive — often the more practical choice given the traffic and the documentation involved. Same side of the road, very different traffic

Iraq drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no lane switch to learn. What is different is the intensity: city traffic in Baghdad and beyond is dense and assertive, with informal right-of-way and frequent checkpoints. Drive defensively and unhurried.

The numbers that are documented

The standout rule is the zero blood-alcohol limit — 0.0. There is no “one drink” margin; do not drink at all before driving. Posted limits run to about 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 120 on motorways, though signage and enforcement are uneven, so drive to the conditions rather than the number. Fuel is cheap at roughly $0.55 a litre, and the emergency number is 112.
