Can an Indian Driver Drive in Iran? — IDP Recommended + a Zero-Alcohol Rule

If you hold an Indian licence and are planning to drive in Iran, three facts matter before anything else. Iran drives on the right, while India drives on the left. The legal alcohol limit is zero. And the paperwork advice on this page is a recommendation, not a verified rule: none of the official sources checked for this page states a licence rule for Indian visitors, so an International Driving Permit alongside your Indian licence is the cautious choice rather than a documented legal minimum. What to carry, and why the answer is cautious

For Iran, none of the official sources checked gives a clear rule for an Indian licence. What is reasonable: your Indian licence, your passport and an IDP applied for at your regional transport office (RTO) before departure. Keep all three together when you drive. If you are travelling with a hire car and driver, ask for the driver’s own licence and insurance details instead. Because the rule is unconfirmed, treat any claim that your licence alone suffices with caution and check with the hire firm before you pay a deposit. The side switch, from left to right

India keeps left, Iran keeps right. Roundabouts circulate the other way, the car you look for first at a junction comes from the opposite direction, and a reflex turn into the near lane can put you head on with traffic. Do not make your first right-hand hour a rush-hour one. Iranian city traffic is busy and assertive, particularly in Tehran, so collect the car at a quiet time and drive a few streets before joining main roads. Say the lane out loud at each turn until it feels natural.

Alcohol: zero, not 0.03

India’s limit is 0.03 and Iran’s is 0.0. Alcohol is prohibited in the country generally, so the zero limit is not a narrow traffic rule. There is no margin and no exception to rely on. For a driver, the position is simple: no alcohol at all.

Speed limits compared with India

Town limits are well below the Indian figure, so the habit of 70 on city roads has to go. Trucks are held to 75 km/h on rural roads and 100 on motorways. No published fine table for Iran was found, so no figure is given. For comparison, a minor speeding offence in India costs INR 1,000-2,000 and a red light INR 1,000-5,000. Equipment and the car you rent

Iran lists a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit and a warning triangle as required equipment, and says a reflective vest is not. India’s own rules list the extinguisher and first-aid kit too, but only recommends the triangle, so check the boot before leaving and ask for any missing item. Photograph the car and check the spare wheel and jack. The minimum driving age is 18 in both countries.

Emergency numbers

Iran’s lines are split. Use 110 for police and 115 for an ambulance, with 125 for the fire service. Those differ from India’s 100 for police, 108 for ambulance and 101 for fire, so save the Iranian set the day you arrive.
