Renting a car or scooter in Indonesia is how most visitors really see Bali, Java and beyond — but for an American driver it is one of the more demanding overseas trips, and not because of the licence. The licence part is simple. The left-hand traffic, the zero alcohol rule, and the sheer density of motorcycles are what take adjusting.
Can you drive in Indonesia on a US licence?
Yes, but with a firm condition: you must carry an International Driving Permit. Unlike most of the destinations Americans ask about, Indonesia treats the IDP as a real requirement, not a nice-to-have — rental agencies in Bali and traffic police both check for it, and driving without one can void your insurance after an incident. The side switch is the biggest single adjustment
The United States drives on the right; Indonesia drives on the left. Every reflex you have — which way to look first, which lane a turn lands you in, how a roundabout flows — is now reversed. The riskiest moments are pulling out of a car park, turning across traffic, and the instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads before you take on city traffic.
Speeds are modest — the motorbikes are the hazard
Limits are low by US standards: 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h rural, 100 km/h on the toll motorways. Numbers are rarely your problem here. The real challenge is the constant stream of motorcycles that filter, undertake and appear from every gap, plus dense traffic through Bali and around Jakarta. A zero alcohol limit
Indonesia runs a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit against the 0.08 you’re used to. There is no margin at all — if you are driving, you don’t drink. Treat it as absolute.
