Can an American Drive in Indonesia? — IDP Required, You Switch to the Left

Renting a car or scooter is how many visitors really see Bali and Java, but for an American it is one of the more demanding overseas drives, and not because of the licence. The U.S. State Department puts it bluntly: traffic in Indonesia is hazardous, congested and undisciplined.

Can an American drive in Indonesia on a US licence?

Yes, with an International Driving Permit alongside it. Our country record lists the IDP as required and notes that enforcement is strict in some areas, with Bali named. The State Department’s Indonesia page says nothing about licences, so the permit rule comes from our record, not from Washington. Apply at home before you travel, because it cannot be issued locally. What the State Department says about the roads

The department’s advice reads like a checklist of things you will not see at home:

• Traffic signals are frequently ignored and often in disrepair.
• Cars share the road with pedicabs and pushcarts.
• Buses and trucks are often dangerously overloaded and travel at high speeds.
• Accidents between a car and a motorcycle are viewed as the fault of the driver of the car.

Its conclusion is to consider these risks before driving your own vehicle, especially if you are unaccustomed to Indonesian road conditions. That fault rule about cars and motorcycles is the one to take seriously, because motorcycles filter, undertake and appear from every gap.

The side switch

The United States drives on the right; Indonesia drives on the left. Which way you look first, which lane a turn puts you in, how a roundabout flows: every reflex reverses. The risky moments are pulling out of a car park, turning across traffic, and the instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads before you take on a city.

If there is an accident

When an accident results in personal injury, Indonesian law requires both drivers to wait for a police officer to arrive and report it. Do not leave, and do not agree to settle on the roadside before the police are there. Know the numbers: police 110, ambulance 118, fire 113, and 112 as the general line. They differ from 911.

Numbers against home

Limits are low by American standards, and the numbers are rarely the problem. The constant stream of motorcycles is. Drive defensively, leave space and plan more time than a map suggests. The Speed Limit Map is useful before a longer leg.

Zero means zero

Indonesia’s record shows a 0.0 alcohol limit against 0.08 at home. There is no margin: if you are driving, you do not drink. If you searched for whether you can drink and drive, the practical answer is no, and a night out should end in a taxi.

Equipment and hiring a driver

A fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit and a warning triangle are listed as required in the car. Many visitors rent a car with a local driver for exactly the reasons above, and for Bali’s busiest routes or a long leg across Java it is worth considering. The State Department also warns that inter-island travel by boat or ferry can be dangerous: storms appear quickly, vessels may be overcrowded and lack basic safety equipment.
