Indonesia on an Indian Licence — IDP Required, but No Side Switch

Indonesia is an easier mental adjustment for an Indian driver than most far-flung destinations, because the one thing that usually trips people up does not apply: Indonesia drives on the left, the same as India. The seat is on the same side, you overtake the same way, and roundabouts flow the direction you expect. The paperwork, however, is stricter than the average, so get that right first.

Can you drive on an Indian licence? Yes — but the IDP is mandatory

This is the key point: Indonesia requires an International Driving Permit to accompany your Indian licence. Unlike many countries where an IDP is merely recommended, here it is the document that makes you legal, and Bali in particular has active enforcement — roadside police checks of foreign riders and drivers are common, and being without an IDP turns into an on-the-spot problem. You cannot get the permit in Indonesia, so apply through your RTO in India before you fly, and carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together.

The real catches: alcohol and traffic density

Indonesia runs a 0.0 alcohol limit — effectively zero tolerance, and tighter than India’s 0.03. There is no allowance for “one drink”, so simply do not mix any alcohol with driving.

The second adjustment is volume, not rules: motorcycles dominate the roads, weaving and filtering in numbers that make even Indian city traffic feel orderly. Bali’s tourist belt and Jakarta are dense and slow; lane markings are advisory at best. Speed limits sit around 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the toll motorways, but you will rarely reach them in the busy areas. Drive predictably, signal early, and give motorcycles a wide, constant margin.
