India on a US Licence — IDP Required, Left-Hand Traffic & a 0.03 Alcohol Limit

India is one of the most demanding places an American can drive, and three specific gaps between home and here decide how your trip goes. None of them is hard to handle once you know they’re coming.

The alcohol limit is less than half of home

The US works to 0.08 BAC in most states; India sets 0.03. That’s the kind of difference that catches confident drivers out — there’s no margin for a beer with lunch before getting behind the wheel. Enforcement is real, penalties are severe, and the only safe rule on a self-drive trip is zero alcohol when you’re driving.

India drives on the left, and US rental paperwork rarely spells this out. Every reflex reverses: the way you scan a junction, the lane you settle into, the direction a roundabout turns. Get the IDP before you leave

An International Driving Permit is mandatory with your US licence and passport. AAA issues one in around 10 days, so don’t leave it to the last week — it can’t be obtained in India.
