Can a Swedish Driver Drive in India? — IDP Required + a Left-Side Switch
Sweden
India
Yes, a Swedish licence holder can drive in India, but an International Driving Permit is REQUIRED alongside it — not just recommended. The two things that hit Swedish drivers hardest are the switch from right- to left-hand traffic and a driving culture rated among the most challenging anywhere: constant horn use, animals on the road and almost no lane discipline.
Coming from the calm, disciplined roads of Sweden, India is about as big a contrast as self-driving offers. The licence rule is firm, and it is genuinely worth being honest with yourself about whether you want to drive at all here, or hire a car with a driver — which is what many visitors do.
The verdict: you must carry an IDP
A Swedish licence alone is not enough. India requires an International Driving Permit carried with your national licence, and it is valid for one year from your date of entry. Sort it in Sweden before you fly; it cannot be issued in India. Keep the IDP, your Swedish licence and your passport together — you will be asked for them at checkpoints.
The hardest part is not the paperwork
Sweden drives on the right; India drives on the left. That switch alone takes concentration, but it is layered on top of conditions Swedish drivers rarely meet: New Delhi and the major cities are rated about as challenging as driving gets, with continuous horn use as communication, cattle and dogs on carriageways, two-wheelers weaving through gaps, and lane markings treated as suggestions. If you do drive, start somewhere rural and quiet, never in city centre traffic on day one.
Speeds, alcohol and fines
Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 rural and 120 km/h on the newer expressways — but actual speeds are dictated by congestion far more than by signs. The drink-drive limit is 0.03, barely above Sweden’s 0.02, so don’t drink and drive at all. A typical speeding penalty runs INR 1,000–2,000 (≈ €11–22), often settled on the spot, so carry small cash. Fuel is around $1.22 a litre and the emergency number is 112.
Confirm the permit requirement with the driving permit checker, read the full local rules on the India driving guide, and estimate any ticket with the speeding fine calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. India requires foreign visitors to carry an International Driving Permit with their national licence; the IDP is valid for one year from entry. Arrange it in Sweden before you travel — you cannot get one on arrival.
India drives on the left, the opposite of Sweden. The side switch is a real adjustment, and it comes on top of dense, fast-moving and unpredictable traffic.
It is 0.03, only marginally above Sweden's strict 0.02, so there is no meaningful margin. Given how busy the roads are, treat it as zero.
