Can a Dutch Driver Drive in India? — IDP Required + Left-Hand Chaos

A Dutch licence holder can drive in India, but unlike most of Europe this is one place where the paperwork is non-negotiable: you need an International Driving Permit carried with your Dutch licence and passport. The IDP is valid for one year from your date of entry, and it is genuinely checked at rental desks. Arrange it in the Netherlands before departure — there is no way to get one once you have landed.

The licence, though, is the easy part. India is rated as one of the most demanding places to drive that you will find on this site, and for a Dutch driver two things make it so.

You switch to the left. The Netherlands drives on the right; India drives on the left. That reversal is hard enough on its own, but here you rarely get the quiet first hour to ease into it. Traffic is dense, horns are used as a constant signalling tool rather than a warning, and lane discipline as you know it does not really exist. Animals on the road, both in towns and on rural stretches, are normal. Plan your first drive somewhere calm and well outside city-centre traffic, and keep your following distances generous.

Speeds and the alcohol line. Town limits are 50 km/h, open roads around 80, and motorways up to 120 km/h — but posted limits matter far less than the conditions in front of you. The drink-drive limit is 0.03, stricter than the Dutch 0.05; given how unpredictable the traffic is, zero alcohol is the only sensible policy. A typical speeding penalty runs around INR 1,000–2,000 (roughly €11–22).
