Quick Answer

India means a switch from right- to left-hand traffic for Italian drivers and a required International Driving Permit. Even those used to assertive Italian city traffic find India a level beyond — lanes are advisory, the horn replaces the mirror, animals share the road, and the limit drops to 0.03.

Italian drivers arrive in India confident about busy roads — and they should still take it seriously, because two things change at once. The side first: India drives on the left, the mirror of Italy, so every roundabout and overtake starts with your instinct reversed. Then the paperwork: an International Driving Permit is required alongside your Italian licence, EU card notwithstanding. Carry both with your passport, arrange the IDP at home, and note it’s valid a year from entry.

If you’ve driven in Naples or central Rome you have a head start on the mindset, but India is a level further. Lane markings are advisory at best, gaps close the instant they open, and the horn carries the message your mirror does in Italy — a tap means “I’m here, I’m coming through,” routine rather than rude. The difference from home is what else shares the road: cattle, dogs, auto-rickshaws and pedestrians, all at once. The whole thing runs on negotiation, not signals. Don’t make your first drive a city centre; ease in on a quieter road and read the flow before committing to Delhi or Bengaluru.

The signed limits look high — 120 km/h on new expressways, 80 rural, 50 in towns — but real speeds are far lower because of congestion and hazards, so treat the numbers as a ceiling. The drink-drive limit is a stricter 0.03 BAC than Italy’s 0.05, and urban checkpoints are common, so don’t drink and drive at all.

Speeding fines are small by Italian standards, about INR 1,000–2,000 (≈ €11–22) for a 10 km/h overrun, but the genuine risk is a collision in dense traffic, not the fine. Fuel is cheap at roughly $1.22/litre, and 112 is the national emergency number.

Read the full rules on our India driving guide, confirm your IDP need with the Driving Permit Checker, and estimate any penalty on the Speeding Fine Calculator.
