India for Italian Drivers — Left-Side Switch, IDP, and Roads Beyond Naples

An Italian driver who has crossed Naples at rush hour arrives in India with a useful instinct and two things to unlearn. India drives on the left, the mirror of Italy, and it asks for an International Driving Permit next to your Italian licence. The EU card on its own does not cover you there.

The permit and how long it counts

India’s rule, as recorded here, is a 1949-model IDP. GOV.UK adds that the period a foreign licence can be used depends on the state, so a permit that is fine in one place is not a guarantee in another. Carry the IDP, the licence and the passport as one set and keep them within reach whenever you drive, because a police stop is where the question comes up. Get the permit before you leave Italy; plan it into the weeks before the flight rather than the days.

Reversing everything you do automatically

Left-hand traffic changes more than the lane. Roundabouts run the other way round, the first look at a junction goes right instead of left, and an overtake happens on the opposite side. The car you rent will have the controls mirrored, so the indicator stalk and the wipers will not be where your hands expect. Spend the first hours somewhere quiet and let a passenger call out “left” at every turn.

If you know Rome or Naples, you will not be shocked by the pace. Lane lines in India are advisory at best, gaps close the instant they open, and the horn works as a mirror: a short tap means “I am here, I am coming through.” On top of the cars you will find cattle, dogs, auto-rickshaws and pedestrians on the same stretch. Plan your first drive outside a big city centre.

Speed limits against Italian ones

India’s urban figure is a national maximum for cars, and local signs often lower it. Real speeds are far lower than any number because of congestion, so read the figures as a ceiling.

Fines are small, risks are not

Indian penalties sit well under Italian ones:

Over 30 km/h above the limit India adds INR 4,000 and above, with a possible suspension. A low fine does not make a collision cheaper, and the danger in dense traffic is the real cost.

Alcohol

India’s limit is 0.03, tighter than the Italian 0.05. There is no point calculating a safe drink, and city checks are common.

In the car and on the phone

India’s record lists a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit as required, while a warning triangle is only recommended and a reflective vest is not required. Italy requires the vest and the triangle. A rental should hold the Indian items, but look in the boot before you accept the car.

Save the numbers before you set off: 112 is the general emergency number, as in Italy, but India’s separate lines are 100 for police, 108 for ambulance and 101 for fire. Italy’s are 113, 118 and 115.

Booking a car or a driver

Many visitors to India hire a car with a driver for city stretches and self-drive only on quieter routes, and for an Italian that is a sensible split. If you do rent without a driver, ask the company which documents it needs, confirm the insurance terms in writing and photograph the car before you leave. Allow generous time for every leg, as real average speeds are much lower than the limits suggest.
