Germany on an Indian Trip — Can You Drive on a German Licence? IDP Required

For a German driver, India is the rare destination where your confidence behind the wheel matters less than your willingness to relearn the basics. The licence question is straightforward; the road is anything but the autobahn.

The licence verdict: valid, but you need an IDP

Your German licence is recognised in India only when it is accompanied by an International Driving Permit. This is a firm requirement — rental firms ask for it, and police at a roadside stop expect to see the IDP, your German licence and your passport as a set. Get the permit before you leave Germany; it is not issued to visitors inside India. It runs for up to a year, so a holiday or a longer stay is covered.

From the autobahn to the left lane

Two things will feel alien at once. First, India drives on the left, the reverse of Germany, so the driver sits on the right and every junction asks you to override an instinct. Second, and more striking, the discipline you take for granted at home simply isn’t there. Lane markings are advisory, vehicles overtake on any side, and the horn is used to announce presence rather than anger. Where a German road rewards precision, an Indian road rewards patience and anticipation. Build in a quiet first hour to let left-side driving settle before you tackle a city.

Speeds, alcohol and what actually slows you down

The posted limits — 50 km/h urban, 80 rural, up to 120 on expressways — are rarely your constraint. Traffic density, road works and unpredictable hazards set your real pace, especially around towns. The drink-drive limit is 0.03 BAC, lower than Germany’s 0.05, and given everything else on the road you should treat it as zero. Driving without the required permit is itself an offence, with fines around INR 1,000–2,000 before any other penalty.
