Germany on an Indian Trip — Can You Drive on a German Licence? IDP Required

Is a German driving licence valid in India? Not by itself. India requires a foreign visitor to carry an International Driving Permit together with the national licence, so your EU card licence needs the IDP beside it, plus your passport. Apply for the permit at your local Führerscheinstelle before you fly. It cannot be issued to visitors once you are in India.

How long you may drive on it is less clear-cut. GOV.UK notes that the period a foreign licence can be used varies from state to state. A two- or three-week holiday is no problem. For a longer stay, check with the hire company or the transport office of the state you are in.

Three documents, every time

Rental desks ask for the IDP, and police at a roadside stop expect the IDP, the German licence and your passport as a set. The IDP is a translation, not a licence. Without the German card next to it, it proves nothing.

Many German visitors skip the question entirely and hire a car with a driver, which is common in India. If your trip is mostly cities, it is worth comparing.

Leaving the Autobahn mindset at home

India drives on the left, the reverse of Germany. The steering wheel moves to the right of the cabin, the gearstick to your left hand, and roundabouts now turn clockwise. Every junction asks you to override an instinct.

The larger change is in how traffic behaves. The UK government’s India advice lists the hazards: animals wandering into traffic, buses driven fast and recklessly, and fog. Lane markings are treated as suggestions, vehicles overtake on either side, and the horn is a way of saying “I am here”, not a sign of anger. German driving rewards precision and rule-following; Indian roads reward patience and constant anticipation. Spend the first hour outside a city, and do not drive at night.

A few habits help. Keep a bigger gap than you would on a German Bundesstraße, because the vehicle ahead may stop without warning to pick someone up or avoid a cow. Watch both mirrors when you turn, since motorbikes fill any space on either side. Tap the horn before overtaking; that is how you tell others you are there. And let buses and trucks have the road when they insist on it, because they will.

Germany and India compared

The 70 km/h town figure is the legal maximum for cars under a 2018 notification by India’s transport ministry; many towns post less, and the sign is what counts. In practice, traffic density sets your speed far more often than any number.

Fines in rupees

Under the Motor Vehicles Act:

• speeding in a car: INR 1,000-2,000 for a first offence
• handheld phone or jumping a red light: INR 1,000-5,000
• no seatbelt: INR 1,000

Those are small sums by German standards. The real cost of a mistake in Indian traffic is a collision, not a fine.

0.03 instead of 0.05

India’s limit, set in the Motor Vehicles Act, is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood, or 0.03. Germany allows 0.05. Given the road conditions, the sensible limit is zero.
