India on a French Licence — Switching Left into the World's Busiest Roads

India confronts French drivers with a side switch and a document, both before the engine starts. The side: India drives on the left, the mirror of France, so the line into a roundabout and the glance at a junction will all feel inverted at first. The document: an International Driving Permit is required alongside your French licence even though it’s an EU card — carry both with your passport, arrange the IDP at home, and remember it runs a year from entry.

Get past those and the real adjustment begins. India’s traffic doesn’t behave like anything on a French route nationale. Lane markings are advisory, drivers fill any gap the instant it appears, and the horn does the job your mirror does at home — a tap signals presence and intent, not irritation. Cattle, dogs, auto-rickshaws and pedestrians all share the carriageway, so the system runs on constant negotiation rather than rules. Don’t let your first drive be a city centre; pick a calmer stretch and watch the rhythm before you take on Delhi or Chennai.

The posted limits flatter the reality — 120 km/h on new expressways, 80 rural, 50 urban — but real speeds sit well below that because of congestion and hazards. Read them as a ceiling. The drink-drive limit is a stricter 0.03 BAC than France’s 0.05, and urban checkpoints are common, so don’t drink and drive at all.

Speeding fines are low by French standards, roughly INR 1,000–2,000 (≈ €11–22) for a 10 km/h overrun, but the real exposure here is a knock in dense traffic, not the penalty. Fuel is cheap at around $1.22/litre, and 112 is the national emergency line.
