Quick Answer

India means two big shifts for Austrian drivers — switching from right- to left-hand traffic, and carrying a required International Driving Permit. Beyond the paperwork, expect roads where lanes are advisory, the horn replaces the mirror, and cattle and pedestrians share the carriageway.

For Austrian drivers, India layers two changes on top of each other. First the side: India drives on the left, the mirror image of home, so every junction, roundabout and overtake starts with your instinct pointing the wrong way. Second the paperwork: even with an EU licence, India requires an International Driving Permit for foreign visitors. Carry it with your Austrian licence and passport, arrange it before you leave, and note it runs a year from entry.

The side switch alone would be enough to manage carefully. What makes India different from, say, crossing into a left-driving European country is what fills the road. Lane markings are treated as advice, gaps close the moment they open, and the horn does the work your mirror does in Austria — a tap is a courtesy that says “I’m passing,” not a complaint. Share that with cattle, dogs, auto-rickshaws and pedestrians and you get traffic that runs on constant negotiation. Don’t make your first drive a city centre; find a calmer road and learn the flow before tackling Delhi or Jaipur.

The posted limits look generous on paper — 120 km/h on new expressways, 80 rural, 50 urban — but real speeds sit far below that because of the congestion and hazards. Read the numbers as a ceiling, not a target. The drink-drive limit is a stricter 0.03 BAC than Austria’s 0.05, and urban police checks are common, so don’t drink and drive at all.

Speeding fines are low by Austrian standards, around INR 1,000–2,000 (≈ €11–22) for a 10 km/h overrun, but the real risk here is a low-speed knock in dense traffic rather than the penalty. Fuel is cheap at roughly $1.22/litre, and 112 is the national emergency number.

See the detail on our India driving guide, confirm the IDP requirement with the Driving Permit Checker, and estimate any penalty on the Speeding Fine Calculator.

Yes. Despite an EU licence, India requires an International Driving Permit alongside it for foreign visitors. Arrange it in Austria before travelling, as it cannot be issued in India, and it is valid for one year from entry.
