Hungary on a US Licence — Buy the E-Vignette First, Then the Zero-BAC Rule

For an American, Hungary’s roads work on two assumptions your home driving never taught you: you pay for the motorway before you reach it, and there is no such thing as one drink before the wheel. Get both right and Hungary is an easy, scenic place to drive.

Pay for the motorway before you join it

Hungary has no toll booths. Its motorways run on an electronic e-vignette (matrica) linked to your licence plate, and the cameras simply read whether your plate is paid. Buy it online or at a petrol-station counter before you drive onto the M-roads — a rental may already include it, so confirm with the desk. Skip it and the fine arrives automatically. Zero means zero

Hungary enforces a 0.00 BAC limit. There is no “had one with dinner” allowance the way many US states tolerate a low reading — any alcohol in your blood is an offence, and roadside testing is common. Treat driving and drinking as completely separate activities for the whole trip.

Speeds, paperwork and fines

Limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 90 on rural roads and 50 in towns, enforced by both fixed and mobile cameras. A 10 km/h-over ticket is roughly HUF 30,000 (≈ €75), and Hungarian cars must carry a warning triangle, reflective vest and first-aid kit.
