The e-matrica is bought for a number plate, not a car: a typo in the plate leaves you unpaid even with a receipt in hand, and the camera surcharge starts at HUF 27,790.
Can you drive in Hungary with a US license? Yes, for one year, as long as the card does not travel alone. The State Department says the US license works with a certified Hungarian translation attached, and that an International Driving Permit from AAA is also acceptable when used with your valid state license. For a vacation, the AAA permit is by far the easier of the two. Hungary drives on the right, so the car will feel familiar. The rules around it are stricter than at home.
Translation or AAA permit
Pick one before you fly. A certified Hungarian translation has to be prepared in advance and attached to the license. The AAA permit is a booklet issued in the US, and both countries are parties to the 1949 convention it is issued under. Keep it with your license and passport: Hungarian police stop vehicles regularly just to check documents. After one year of residence you must switch to a Hungarian license.
The e-matrica comes before the motorway
Tolled motorways have no booths. You buy an e-matrica, an electronic vignette linked to the plate, at a gas station or online, and cameras check it. A 10-day national pass for a car costs HUF 6,900 in 2026. A single wrong character in the plate number leaves the car unpaid. Zero alcohol, and they test
Hungary’s tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is zero. Police run routine roadside checks with breath tests, and the State Department calls prison sentences for impaired driving or crashes caused by it severe. The 0.08 you know from home is not a guide here. No beer at lunch if you are driving afterwards.
Rules that catch Americans
- Hand-held phones are not allowed while driving.
- Children under 12 may not sit in the front seat, and infants need a car seat.
- Seat belts are compulsory for everyone.
- The car must carry a warning triangle, a reflective vest and a first-aid kit.
Fines are modest by US standards: about HUF 30,000 each for a phone, red light or missing belt. Speeding rises to HUF 45,000 and HUF 60,000 with a possible suspension, and on roads limited above 100 km/h the scale starts at HUF 50,000 and tops out at HUF 468,000.
How a Hungarian ticket works
Police issue the fine as a postal check showing the amount, which you pay at any Hungarian post office. If you choose to contest it, police will keep your passport and give you an “invitation letter” to come to the station; you get the passport back once the dispute is resolved or the fine paid. For a short trip, paying promptly is usually the practical choice.
Rural roads after dark
Highways and city roads are generally in good condition. Rural roads are another story: often narrow and poorly lit, shared with pedestrians, tractors and farm animals. Emergencies and Budapest
Dial 112 to reach English-speaking operators; roadside help, medical services included, is available. The direct lines are 107 for police, 104 for ambulance and 105 for fire. In Budapest itself, consider leaving the car parked: trams, the subway and buses are reliable, and taxis are yellow and metered. The Embassy urges travelers to insist on the meter rather than agreeing a fare.
