Hungary on a Swedish Licence — No IDP, but Zero Alcohol & an E-Vignette

For a Swedish driver, Hungary is reassuringly familiar where it counts — your licence works without a permit, the side of the road is the same, and the no-alcohol driving culture you keep at home is mirrored here. The one genuinely new task is how you pay for the motorways.

The verdict: your licence is enough

A Swedish licence is valid in Hungary with no IDP required. As an EU/EEA document it’s recognised directly, so you carry your licence and passport and skip the permit. Driving is on the right, exactly as in Sweden, so there’s nothing to relearn at junctions.

Alcohol: no surprises

Hungary enforces a 0.0 BAC limit. Coming from Sweden’s near-zero 0.02, this asks nothing new of you — you already treat any alcohol as too much before driving, and Hungary makes the same rule explicit. Keep your home discipline and you’re covered.

The e-vignette is the part to plan for

This is the bit that’s actually different. Hungarian motorways aren’t tolled at booths — they require an electronic vignette (e-matrica) registered to your number plate, bought in advance online or at a filling station. There’s nothing to stop and pay at on the road, so the responsibility is yours: have the vignette active before you join a motorway, or the plate-reading cameras will catch you and issue a fine.
